Ghost is a loving, well behaved 2 1/2 year old Great Pyrenees.  Due to unforseen circumstances, his family is needing to rehome him.  Ghost's temperment and behavior is spot on for a Great Pyreness - please see below for traits and behavior of the Great Pyrenees. It's important to have someone that knows the breed well, in order for Ghost to be happy in his new home.

He is housebroken.  He can be left alone and won't eat the house. He loves and protects his pack which includes lots of barking. He is loving and gentle with family and friends. He lives with a cat, and a large lizard. He visits another house regularly where he plays wih much smaller dogs and a cat. He is a 2 1/2 year old, neutered male, up to date shots, heartworm, and flea meds. He is microchipped and had his double dew claws removed. Current insurance is available.

Ghost would do well with lots of fenced property that he can protect and maybe have a job protecting animals but he also needs to be close to his family and have time to lounge around with his humans. Ghost needs someone that will take the time to train him properly. He needs to learn to not be a flight risk when someone leaves a gate open.

Although he loves to play with other dogs, he is very reactive when he is leashed and on a walk. Because he is so reactive on a leash, it should be noted that Ghost is not a dog that will be joining you on walks and runs in public areas until he is properly trained.

If interested, please fill out an application that will be forwarded to his current owner.  She will contact you, if she thinks it's a good fit but be prepared to be asked lots of questions about who you are and where their baby will possibly go. Rehoming fee $500.

Personality of the Great Pyrenees:

The Great Pyrenees is a calm, well-mannered, serious dog known for his great devotion to family, including well-behaved children. These dogs are generally trustworthy, affectionate and gentle, but if the need arises, they will not hesitate to try to protect their family and their territory.

The Great Pyrenees was bred to be left alone and guard sheep in mountain valleys, so they are by nature relatively independent. This independence can make obedience training more of a challenge than is the case with other breeds. The same guarding roots also have left the Pyr with a strong instinct to bark.

Living With a Great Pyrenees:

The Great Pyrenees can be a wonderful companion if you live in a suburban or rural area and lead a fairly placid life. These dogs like having quiet time in the house and enjoy a predictable, orderly routine.

The guarding nature of this breed makes socialization especially important. Exposure to as many new people, places and situations as possible, especially when the Pyr is a puppy, will help moderate any excessive protectiveness. Patience during training is a must, because a Pyr tends to be independent and even stubborn. Even then, do not expect the Pyr to win any obedience championships.

Grooming needs are moderate. Regular brushing of the double coat will keep it in good condition, but be prepared for a major annual shed. The outer coat does not mat, which makes care relatively easy.

Expectations:

Exercise Requirements: 20-40 minutes/day
Energy Level: Laid back
Longevity Range: 10-12 yrs.
Tendency to Drool: High Tendency to Snore: Low
Tendency to Bark: High
Tendency to Dig: Low Social/Attention Needs: Moderate
